Why More Veterans are Running for Congress

Boston, MA - In this May 25 article, the Christian Science Monitor points to the Bipartisan Index to argue that veterans are more likely than nonveterans to cosponsor bipartisan legislation. "Military veterans know how to trust in teams and put aside differences in the pursuit of shared objectives... And they’re now asking voters to deploy them – this time to temper the politics of tribalism."

Lugar and Nunn on Disarming North Korea

Washington, DC - In 1991, Senators Sam Nunn (D-GA) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) oversaw the creation of the bipartisan Nunn-Lugar Act, which denuclearized the Soviet Union as it was breaking apart. What lessons can be learned from that experience and applied to a potential agreement with North Korea? In this June 7 NPR Morning Edition report, host Steve Inskeep discusses this question.

Confession of an Anti-GMO Activist

New York, NY - "How could I so forcefully endorse the scientific consensus on climate change while simultaneously denying the scientific consensus on GMOs?" reflects scientist Mark Lynas in a June 22 Wall Street Journal Article. Formerly a staunch detractor of GMO science, Lynas outlines the evidence of genetic engineering's benefits for food security and health at home and abroad - one of The Lugar Center's core issue areas.

ExxonMobil and Chevron Cited Over Tax Secrecy

London, UK - In a June 6 Financial Times article, journalist Ed Crooks relates how some of America's largest extractive industry companies have declined to report their tax payments, despite NGOs' calls for transparency. Bucking the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, or EITI, a spiritual successor to Cardin-Lugar anticorruption legislation, ExxonMobil and Chevron chose not to report spending, demonstrating that the 15-year-old EITI is in danger of buckling.

Bipartisanship in the Sunshine State

Saint Petersburg, FL - Citing The Lugar Center's Bipartisan Index, FloridaPolitics.com's June 12 "Sunburn" reports on Florida Representatives' bipartisan accomplishments. Like many other news sources, the Sunburn looks to the Index as a tool to quantitatively measure House bipartisanship - proof positive that the Index is making an impact.
